Once you have made or renewed an order, whether it be an initial order, a continuing care order or a community treatment order you are required to give to the patient and their person responsible (if there is one) a statement setting out the patient's legal rights, including their right to apply to the Tribunal for a review.
You are also required to provide the patient with a written statement setting out an explanation of their condition and the nature of the proposed treatment. This statement should be sufficient for the person to be able to understand the diagnosis, the general nature and effect of the proposed treatment, the possible side effects (if any) and any alternatives which may be available.
Both these statements should be comprehensive and be given in a format which is understandable by the patient and their responsible person.
You must not withhold any information from these statements unless the provision of the information would have an adverse effect upon the patient's treatment.
